9-1-1, we have a makeover emergency on our hands

When you think of the US garment industry, what do you think of? For us, it was the American Apparel scandals and the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. Safe to say, we needed an update on what’s been going on and what needs to happen to improve it in every which way. So, we brought in the expert – Emily Stochl, who is not only a fellow podcaster, but the Director of Education at Remake. Her and the Remake team have been organizing to create a garment industry that’s rid of wage theft, has said see ya to piece rate pay [a wormy loophole around the minimum wage], has oversight that protects workers, and incentivizes US manufacturing. And the result is the FABRIC Act, which they brought to the literal table this week in DC:

The gorgeous-stunning-fabulous bill is one we talk quite a bit about in the episode, as well as what comes next and what the progression of the garment industry has been in the US over the years. If you’re into fashuuuun, sustainability, and worker’s rights, my lanta is this the episode for you. Our rec from us to you? Download the episode on Apple Podcasts or Spotify Podcasts and listen on your next thrift trip [we know that’s what we’ll be doing because we’re on the lookout for an oversized vintage Lacoste sweatshirt – if anyone sees one, LET US KNOW].

30 SECONDS, THREE ACTION ITEMS

We know we usually keep these to our Monday edition, but we can’t help ourselves. “Action items are good for your health” - Sammy & Maddie on any given random Tuesday

  • Let your reps know, you want them to co-sponsor and pass the FABRIC Act because piece rate pay is more of style than skinny jeans.

  • Rep. Raskin said that SCOTUS is funded by right-wing sugar daddies. Cut them off, tell your reps you want term limits now.

  • Dear Congress, please deliver a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients – make that ask here.
