GOOD NEWS BEARS

MD GOV. WES MOORE ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH OF MARYLAND’S 1ST STATE-SPONSORED REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM FOR TEACHING: Maryland is getting its very first state-sponsored registered apprenticeship program for teaching, with the goal of increasing access to training and solving for the current teacher shortage. The program is a collab between the MD Department of Ed, the Maryland State Education Association, and the MD Department of Labor, and in design, mirrors a framework that was first put into action at the county level [St. Mary’s County]. The Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council have also given their stamp of approval on the program, which will allow teachers-to-be to get in-classroom training while they’re getting their college degree and teaching license.

DE GOV. MEYER SIGNED TWO BILLS TO PROTECT LIBRARY MATERIALS & FREE SPEECH: Delaware’s Gov. Matt Meyer signed not one, but two bills that aim to push back against anti-free speech book bans. The first bill, HB119, mandates that books and other library resource materials can’t be either removed or banned from public and school libraries based on the background of the author, or because of partisan, ideological, or religious objections. And for the Karen’s that do have complaints, the bill creates a streamlined and comprehensive review process; a key detail – materials that are under review must continue to be made available during the review. The second bill turned law, makes UPEPA aka the Uniform Public Expression Protection Act, which is meant to prevent an onslaught of intimidation-based lawsuits known as SLAPPs, a thing in DE. This new slate of anti-SLAPP law has been made legit in 13 other states.

164 UNIT AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT OPENS IN ROCHESTER, NY: A former parking lot in Rochester, NY has been transformed into an 164-unit affordable and supportive housing development. The energy efficient development, known as Center City Courtyard, includes 95 units that are set to provide on-site supportive services to veterans and people either encountering or at-risk of homelessness. The same units have access to rental subsidies as well, with all apartments throughout being affordable to households earning at or below 80% of the area media income. The project, and the financing that made it possible, is a part of NY Gov. Hochul’s five-year housing plan that has a goal of creating 100,000 affordable homes across the state.

CATACLYSMIC CORRUPTION

And other moves of disproportionate idiocy

  • The current White House ‘border czar,’ Tom Homan has found himself aboard the hot mess express with the deats from an undercover FBI operation last year revealing that he’d accepted $50K in cash in return for getting “biz execs” lucrative contracts in Trump Admin 2.0. Plot twist: those biz execs were undercover agents. According to reporting from MSNBC, both the FBI and DOJ played wait and see on how he’d make his promises happen v. not – a play that became a permanent delay once Trump took office, and has resulted in the investigation being closed in recent weeks. Sick.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

In the club, we’re all sick

  • RFK Jr.’s FDA has begun the approval process for leucovorin as a treatment for autism. The drug is most commonly used to treat autoimmune disease, as well to treat the effects of chemo. While many medicines have multiple uses, the research connecting leucovorin and its impact on children with “autisim-like symptoms” is minimal at best.

  • A man with no medical degree [the president] suggested that the childhood vaccine schedule should change based on what he feels – men in STEM, right?? He also suggested that children not get the hepatitis b vaccine until they’re 12y/o because from his view it’s an STI…meanwhile, hep b can be transmitted between mothers and their child at birth, which equals out to a 90% chance of infected infants developing chronic hep b and being put on the likely to die from chronic liver disease pipeline.

  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott [R] has signed yet another extreme abortion ban bill into law. This particular new law allows residents of the LoneStar State to sue manufacturers, distributors, and providers of medication abortion for a minimum of $100k in damages.

EXTREMISM

…that’s the tweet [or the x]

  • In an absolutely abhorrent move, the FBI is now going to categorize trans people [people that just want to be their authentic selves] as “nihilistic violent extremists,” according to a new report. The Project 2025-supported categorization from hell, defines “NVE” as “criminal conduct…in furtherance of political, social, or religious goals that derive primarily from a hatred of society at large and a desire to bring about its collapse by sowing indiscriminate chaos.” TBH, feels like the GOP is telling on themselves with this one.

  • Trump made a central appearance at Charlie Kirk’s funeral [expected]. At the podium, he shared that he differed from Charlie in that he hates his opponents and doesn’t want the best for them [classic].

  • According to investigative reporting from the Miami Herald, hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees have dropped off the grid after leaving the detention center in some capacity. By the numbers, ~800 detainees showed no record in ICE’s database, and more than 450 didn’t have a location listed.

  • Trump told the press that when “97% of the stories are bad about a person, that’s no longer free speech.” That’s not girl math, that’s authoritarian math.

  • A man was arrested in Arizona and is facing terrorism charges, after he’d allegedly shared via a crisis hotline that he had plans to shoot up a gay bar. The shared plans triggered a welfare check by police, with the man telling them that his threats were based on his anger over the murder of Charlie Kirk.

  • Hegseth’s Defense Department has set out new rules for the press, requiring them to sign a wack ass pledge that if they don’t sign will result in them losing their Pentagon press credentials. The new rules include a block on gathering or reporting info [even if unclassified] unless it’s been authorized for official release by the government.

Stories that are guaranteed to make it to the group chat

  • Two Oklahoma Republicans have intro’d a bill that would require that all of the state’s public universities build a “Charlie Kirk Memorial Plaza” that includes a sign that would declare Kirk a “modern civil rights leader.” If a university didn’t follow suit, they would have to pay a monthly fine.

  • Trump’s Dept of Edu is #collabing with more than 40 conservative orgs to make “civics” content in honor of USA’s 250th birthday. The group of orgs has been dubbed the America 250 Civics Education Coalition and includes Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA and the Heritage Foundation as its leads. Mind you, according to NPR, the federal gov isn’t allowed to direct/supervise/control school curriculums.

IT’S THE ECONOMY

Money, money, money

  • A yearly survey that’s been done to track food insecurity across the country, the Household Food Security Report, has gotten the Trump Admin axe. The report’s longstanding goal has been to provide data that can inform how to combat food insecurity, and in some version of political twister, the Trump Admin has dubbed that goal as ‘too politicized.’

  • American’s credit scores are dropping at the fastest pace since the Great Recession. Gen-Z specifically is cited as having the biggest credit score decline, with an average three-point drop.

  • Two droughts of shitty proportions are hitting Vermont dairy farmers harder than a Nor’easter. The result is farmers needing to spend mega-bucks to bring in water and feed to keep their cows moo-ving. For ref on impact, per CBS News, dairy farming generates $5.4 billion for the state’s economy yearly.

  • Sunday was a day of chaos for holders of H-1B visas, specifically those that received news while returning to the U.S. that there would now be a $100,000 fee for H-1B visa holders. The confusion was brought down a notch when the Trump Admin clarified that the new fee would not apply to current H-1B visa holders. However, the news has absolutely rattled visa holders and businesses [and anyone that has a desire for a competitive economy and talent pool].

CHRONICALLY ONLINE

Politics meets social media

  • Congressman John Larson [D-CT] went scorched earth on Republicans, Elon, and DOGE for operating outside of Congress and having no backbone, to the point where no one knew if the mic in front of him would hold up.

  • Sen. John Hickenlooper [D-CO] asked former CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez and former CDC Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Debra Houry what keeps them up at night – and their answers might keep you up too.

  • Don Lemon sat down with Sen. Slotkin [D-MI] asked her point blank, “is free speech dead?” This is what she said.

  • A self-proclaimed pro-MAGA rapper known as…drum roll please… “Forgiato Blow,” performed a song he wrote in honor of Charlie Kirk to supporters waiting in line to attend Kirk’s funeral.

Lawsuits & legal tings to know about

  • 10 NY state legislators and NYC Comptroller Brad Lander were arrested last week while protesting ICE on what has become a terrifyingly notorious floor in 26 Federal Plaza. Additional electeds were arrested outside the building as well – which btw, Homeland Security referred to as “agistators and sanctuary politicians.”

  • A federal judge has ruled that an offshore wind project that was put on pause in August by the Trump Admin, can resume its construction. The nearly complete project had received a stop-work order under the guise of national security, leading the developer behind the project, and the two states involved – Rhode Island and Connecticut – to sue [aka how we got here].

  • In another “L” for Trump, a federal judge ordered that the Trump Admin restore $500 million in federal grant money to UCLA -  money that Admin had frozen. The judge’s injunction is based on what she views as a likely violation of Administrative Procedure Act.

  • SCOTUS has agreed to take up a rush job case from Trump on whether he can fire members of the Federal Trade Commission [FTC]. In the meantime, while SCOTUS twiddles their legal thumbs, they’ve allowed Trump to go ahead and fire Rebecca Slaughter, the FTC Commissioner the case is built around.

BACK ON OUR BILLSH*T

Bills, bills, bills

FEDERAL, LGBTQ+ SUICIDE PREVENTION HOTLINE: Following the Trump Admin shutting down the 988 crisis line for LGBTQ+ youth earlier this year, Sen. Tammy Baldwin [D-WI] and Sen. Lisa Murkowski [R-AK] have teamed up to intro the 988 LGBTQ+ Youth Access Act, which if passed would codify the specialized hotline and require funding to be dedicated to ensuring its reestablishment and operation.

FEDERAL, FREE SPEECH: Congresswoman Crockett has intro’d the FREE SPEECH Act of 2025 in response to attacks on free speech vis a vis the Jimmy Kimmel sitch. The bill specifically would ban the FCC from putting conditions on approvals for m&a and licenses, as related to the views of a sitting president; would ban the FCC from issuing rules that push companies that it’s charged with regulating to either adopt or suppress political viewpoints; and lastly, requires that the FCC remain independent from an admin.
